Fact & Fiction began as a seed. A thought, a vision, a dream among five individuals, each with their own story, heritage, and background. What happens when you blend the musical backgrounds of Rock, Soul, Jazz, and R&B? What happens when you water this seed? This Los Angeles based band is doing just that, and they are sprouting like weeds across the globe. The vision that became Fact & Fiction begins with Grant Elliot, lead singer and acoustic and electric rhythm guitarist. He was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma, and his passion for music took hold early. He is a multi -instrumentalist and has played in bands since he was eleven. It was through these band experiences that Grant discovered his knack for songwriting. His songs gave him a greater purpose and meaning in life and it was this passion that brought him to L.A. and ultimately to the formation of Fact & Fiction. Jay Multanen brings an eclectic musical background to Fact & Fiction. His enthusiasm for music began early as he played piano and violin growing up in Boise, Idaho. Picking up the String Bass, he continued his study of classical music but also delved into the world of Jazz, Rock and Pop music. Focusing on the bass, both acoustic upright and electric guitar, Jay took his musical endeavors to Portland, Oregon where he played the renowned band Genesis. After a three year stint with the band, he was off to Los Angeles to study with esteemed Jazz Legend and composer/arranger John Clayton Jr. as he was named a John Coltrane Foundation Scholar. Grant and Jay met in Los Angeles as both were seeking like-minded musicians to collaborate with. The two gelled immediately and began creating music in an organic acoustic setting while playing every gig they could get their hands on. Envisioning this music growing into a bigger sound, the two sought out the melodious gunslinger guitar stylings of Willis Clow. Prior to joining Fact & Fiction, Willis had just finished producing and recording the self-titled release of The Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, on which several of his arrangements and compositions appeared. Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Willis matriculated at the University of Southern California. Once in Los Angeles, and while working on a master's degree, Willis continued his pursuit of performing and recording music ranging from Rock and Reggae, to Hip-Hop and Jazz. As the three individuals came together, the Dream began to converge. The music was great but they felt there was a vast harmonic void that left Grant, Jay and Willis seeking something more. It was at that time when Jay's longtime friend and synth-enthusiast, Peter Joel Dyer (P.J. as he is known to his friends) arrived in LA to further his understanding of the anomaly of good music. He was the element they had been looking for, bringing a vast knowledge of music harmony, channeled through his mastery of the piano, organ, and synthesizer, not to mention the largest and most diverse record collection in the known world. PJ hails from Salem, Oregon, but he and Jay had collaborated as members of Genesis, which received three Down Beat Magazine Awards, touring and recording multiple albums including "Under the Influence," "Big Dipper," "Don't Think It's Easy," and "A Case of the Mondays." To complete their sound, the four went in search of a drummer with a big kick and Red Bull like energy. While dropping in at Howl at the Moon, a dueling piano bar in Universal Citywalk, they found what they were looking for in drummer Hale' Johnson. Hale' was born and raised in the heart of North Hollywood, where he was exposed to music early and often in his church. His passion blossomed and he began studying piano at the age of 6 and then decided to start learning how to play the drums at the age of 17. Hale enhanced his musical education with his cousin and uncle Ron Bruner Sr. and Jr. and soon adopted the original stage name, Lil Drummer Dude. He has played for or toured with the likes of The Vapor Project, Betty Keller, Slapbak, Ce-Ce (guitarist for Poison), Dazz Band and Tevin Campbell just to name a few. He was also a member and recorded two DVDs with hip hop legend Digital Underground "Live at the DNA Lounge" and "Humpin' in San Jose." It did not take long for sparks to fly once Grant, Jay, Willis, P.J. and Lil Drummer Dude were together. They have since taken Southern California by storm, selling out some of LA's hottest venues such as The Roxy, The Joint, and The Gig. The rest of the country is now falling victim to the craze that is Fact & Fiction and the band is excited about their upcoming summer tour. At the historic Ocean Way recording studio, Fact & Fiction has just recently worked with Producer Jeffery Weber and Grammy winning and Emmy nominated Recording Engineer and Mixer Clark Germain. Weber is a 7 time Grammy Nominee and 2 time Grammy Award Winning Producer. He also claims seventeen albums that have made the top 10 and two number one albums. Fact & Fiction is pleased to announce the release of their debut album, "A Perfect World." Fact & Fiction has a unique combination of personality, style, background, and talent that separates them from other bands out there. As you listen to their album, you may be asking yourself "Why only five songs? Is this an EP?" You see, Fact & Fiction is all about taking a "new" approach to marketing and distributing their music. The plan is to offer five song albums, or EPs, every 4 months, so fans will consistantly have new material in their hands and on their iPods. These albums will also be offered at a significantly lower price than regular full length albums. So check out "A Perfect World" and think of it as a taste of things to come. You see, a song to Fact & Fiction, is a vision; a statement; an emotion; a moment in time channeled through the chords and melodies of their music. Five hearts that beat as one. All are encouraged to participate and join in with the one steady downbeat that is Fact & Fiction. |
